Many mattresses can have a layer between the mattress and the floor to provide supportive environment. The type of platform bed raised off the ground will depend on several factors.
All mattresses need to have a firm, solid foundation in order for them to last. Box springs were created to help protect against wear and tear on the mattress. However, mattresses with thinner profiles were primarily found in wake of coil-innerspring designs. Mattresses don’t necessarily require a box spring these days, however they may at times.
Whether or not you should use a box spring depends on a few factors. Majority of people that need to use a box spring are:
- In a traditional metal rail bed frame, box springs are cradled.
- Those who have an older innerspring mattress designed for use with a box spring.
- Those who have a mattress with a suggested boxspring.
- There are many people who desire to raise their mattress in order to make it easier for them to get into and out of bed, but there may be other alternatives that can serve this same purpose as well.
The following people should not use a box spring:
- Those with newer memory foam or latex mattresses.
- Those who prefer the style or functionality of a platform, wood foundation, etc…
- Those who want to sleep on a mattress rather than on the floor.
Most recent models of mattresses including “mattresses in a box” require no box springs as they are designed for just the mattress. However, these beds may be damaged if you place them on top of an old or traditional style spring frame.
Box springs are designed for use with innerspring beds, and some models do not provide the same amount of rigidity a foam bed needs.
When deciding whether or not to purchase a box spring, consult the recommendations of your bed manufacturer. This information can be found on the company’s website, as well as on tags attached to mattresses prior to purchase.
Different types of mattresses will require different types of foundations, so it is helpful to go directly to the manufacturer for recommendations. It’s also important to note that some mattress warranties stipulate that you use a particular type of baseboard if you want them covered under warranty.
What is a Box Spring?
A boxspring is a support for your mattress that’s manufactured to be the same size as the bed. It consists of a wooden frame filled with springs and wrapped in fabric. It sits directly below your mattress, providing support.
The box spring serves the following purposes:
- To provide the mattress with a layer of protection.
- To make the bed more comfortable.
- To protect the mattress from being damaged by impact, use.
- To improve airflow, which is responsible for cooling down the mattress.
Box springs provide support and spring back. This is a good feature for innerspring beds but can be damaging for foam mattresses. A foam mattress should be placed on a very stable base, such as a platform bed.
Over a decade ago, a box spring was essential when purchasing a new mattress. However, this may not be the case anymore. While some mattresses still require box springs, others do not.
The term ‘box spring’ refers to the traditional design that includes metal springs (or less expensive, metal grid patterns) in a wooden or metal frame. There are other types of supports under mattresses including platform beds and foundations.
Box Spring vs Foundation vs Platform Bed
Most mattresses require the floor to be covered with a protective, moisture guard material. While many beds work just fine without this covering for support and air circulation, their use can lead to unsanitary conditions.
Basic mattress protection usually consists of fitted sheets made specifically for that purpose. In order to provide a supportive and comfortable bed, most people will want to use some sort of foundational system – either an innerspring bed plus box spring, or a platform style base.
A box spring is a simple support consisting of a wooden/metal frame, filled with metal coils or springs and wrapped in fabric. It is primarily used for an innerspring mattress. Typically box springs are designed to sit on top of a bed frame.
A foundation is another type of support system usually consisting of wooden slats or flat frames. They are sometimes referred to as box springs, but they don’t actually contain metal springs. Mattresses can be used on their own, but it is much more comfortable to use a foundation.
Foundations are designed for bed frames, and some foundations are free-standing.
A platform bed provides both a foundation and a frame. They may have wooden legs or storage drawers at the bottom. Platform beds offer an all-in-one solution, but can be more expensive than some other options.
Adjustable beds are used in hospitals to help patients go from a full horizontal position to sitting or even standing. This type of bed can be valuable for those who like reading or watching TV from bed, and older individuals who have difficulty getting out of the bed in the morning. Adjustable beds are significantly more expensive than other options and need specific types of Mattresses.
